The crystalline facade is a dazzling collage of interlocking hexagonal patterns that are scattered across the curved surface of the building, allowing every side of the structure to hold equal importance and look as though it could serve as the library's front. This unique appearance results from site constraints; the new central library is built over a light rail transit line that runs through the city's heart.
A play of wood-slat planes rises towards a large skylight in the central atrium, forming the primary vertical circulation. Stairs are embedded within the atrium, affording changing views as one ascends. In addition to being a main public space, the library also offers rooms for programming and events, including an edgy performance hall and a large children's area that cascades down through the gently terraced floors. It's not hard to imagine how this facility could become an iconic Calgary institution.
The Military Museums
